About the Vuelta a España

The Vuelta a España is unquestionably the most prestigious cycling event in the world.

The Spanish are fanatical, and fanatical about their cycling. Quiet villages awaken for the passage of the professional peloton. The most fearsome climb of all grand tours, Alto d’Angliru is located in the Asturias and as touted by race organisers “a Grand Tour without Angliru is like a 15min football match or a 5km marathon”.

Each year Bikestyle Tours hosts guests to the final 10 to 12 days of the Vuelta, depending on the route. Typically this includes visiting the cycling paradise of the Asturias, the “green spain” of the Cantabrian coastline, the fanatical Basque country and the Pyrenees. Logistics permitting, our trip finishes in the famous Arts district of Madrid for the final stage.

Learn all about the Vuelta a Espana

The Vuelta a España Explained

Held in late August and September, the Vuelta a España brings together around 176 riders for the final Grand Tour of the season, covering approximately 3,000km over three weeks.

By this point in the year, the racing is aggressive and open. Stages are often shorter but more intense, with steep, punchy climbs that create explosive racing.

Heat and fatigue play a role, and the race can change quickly from one day to the next. Summit finishes are frequent, and time gaps are often decided in short, decisive efforts.

The Vuelta is fast, unpredictable, and often delivers some of the most exciting racing of the season.

What Makes the Vuelta Special

The Vuelta brings a different energy.

By late August, the racing is aggressive, with riders willing to take risks on shorter, steeper climbs that often decide the stage in the final kilometres.

The Spanish culture adds its own rhythm to the event. The days are longer, the pace is more relaxed, and life centres around food, socialising, and being outdoors. Evenings stretch late, and the race becomes part of a broader lifestyle experience.

Crowds are passionate but less dense, making it easier to get close to the action. There’s a balance between high-intensity racing and a more laid-back environment off the bike.

It’s a Grand Tour experience that feels both exciting and accessible.

The Jerseys
  • Red Jersey: Overall race leader
Awarded to the rider with the lowest cumulative time across all stages and worn by the leader throughout the race.
  • Green Jersey (Points Classification): Best sprinter
Points are awarded at stage finishes and intermediate sprints, with a balanced distribution across different stage types.
  • Polka Dot Jersey (King of the Mountains): Best climber
Points are earned on categorised climbs, with summit finishes often playing a key role.
  • White Jersey: Combination classification leader
Awarded to the rider who performs consistently across general classification, points, and mountains classifications.
Key Highlights of the Race
  • Summit Finishes
Frequent uphill finishes on steep climbs, often deciding the outcome of stages and the overall race.
  • Short, Explosive Stages
Stages are often more aggressive, with less predictable racing and constant attacks.
  • Heat and Conditions
High temperatures, particularly in the early stages, add an extra challenge for riders.
  • Late-Season Racing
With the season nearing its end, riders often take more risks, leading to dynamic and unpredictable racing.
