It is our last day in the Asturias region, as well as for the riders of La Vuelta. Today’s summit finish is on one of the most scenic climbs in the area, the Alto de la Cubilla, and many say it draws parallels with the great Col du Tourmalet.

Summit finish in Asturias

It is our last day in the Asturias region, as well as for the riders of La Vuelta. Today’s summit finish is on one of the most scenic climbs in the area, the Alto de la Cubilla and many say it draws parallels with the great Col du Tourmalet.  The climbs statistics are similar, near 2000m at the summit, more than 20 km to reach the summit and an average of near 7%.

For those wanting to clock up the kilometres, along with veritcal metres this holiday, we have the option to ride from our hotel and follow much of today’s race route. If you’d like to save your legs for the climb, we will take you closer to the base of the climb, giving you lots of time to reach up as far as you’d like.

We will watch the race on the final climb and return to our transport to travel back to our hotel. Tonight we will enjoy our final dinner in the Asturia Mountains. Mark it as a small celebration for achieving some great climbs in the area and the realisation of why so many cyclists adore this area.

TODAY IN THE RACE
Stage 16 – Pravia to Alto de la Cubilla
Normally allocated as a rest day, today will be the 7th consecutive day riders are in the saddle. They will be looking forward to tomorrow’s rest day. However, they must first negotiate a final mountain stage in the Asturias. Their legs will be heavy as they crest 3 categorised climbs before the final 27 km long climb to Alto de la Cubilla. It will be a grind to the top. Only then can riders think about their recovery for the final week.
