Modern with Vieux Lyon and Fete Nationale

Today we’ll transfer to Lyon and explore, with the bonus of joining the national day celebrations for Bastille Day. As it is a public holiday and a Sunday, the roads will be quiet, which gives us a unique opportunity this afternoon to ride through the city and its surrounds with few vehicles. Exploring an old city by bike is one of the greatest ways to experience its culture along with the medieval and Renaissance architecture that Lyon is famous for.

Lyon, also a modern city, has some of the best modern transport infrastructures, particularly for bicycles. We’ll first visit the trendy modern confluence quarter, where a striking museum has been built where the Saône river joins the Rhône. Some liken its appearance to the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao.

After our ride, you can recharge and enjoy watching the finish to today’s stage. With a finish in his home town on their national day, the French will be cheering for a stage victory for Romain Bardet or in consolation him winning one of the jerseys. Patriotically it would thrill the nation. Tonight, you’re free to savor deliciousness at a nearby restaurant.

TODAY IN THE RACE
Stage 9: Saint-Étienne to Brioude, Hilly, 170 km
A similar menu of climbing completes the transfer across Central Massif and again favours a breakaway. The steep climb at 35 km will select those courageous enough to join the battle and continual undulations will drain their energy. The final 4 km climb before the finish will turn breakaway compatriots to foes. Is there a chance the break will hold on today? It will be tough, but look out for a French rider on their national day.
