Long Ride

Steepest of them all! Our first 7 Peaks Challenge climb certainly packs a punch, making it one of the hardest. However, the beautiful ferns and winding road on approach is tranquil and spectacular.

After a wholesome breakfast we’ll transport south into Gippsland and the southern most alpine area in Victoria, Mt Baw Baw village. After a wholesome breakfast we’ll transport south into Gippsland and the southern most alpine area in Victoria, Mt Baw Baw village. Our official climb is 12 km in length, but the last 6km is the most challenging.

Our ride starts in Noojee, an Aboriginal name for restful place. Restful it is. It is hard to believe that we’re just 100km from Melbourne, yet here we escape the frenetic pace and noise. The road is enshrouded in ferns and often littered with fallen strips of bark that have fallen from the giant eucalypts.

A scenery from fairy tales, perfect for cycling

Our shorter ride starts a little closer to Mt Baw Baw cutting 30km of mostly uphill from the ride. From this alternative start location the road winds crossing various creeks to arrive at “The Gantry”, the official start of the strava segment.

We turn into the resort entry and the road noticeably rises ahead. Our legs seem heavier and our doubts flood in. Fortunately some of the corners disguise the steepening gradient. Settle into a rhythm or just do what you can. Pain is temporary and you’ll reach the resort car parks where the gradient also eases up. Not far now.

There is a great cafe at the top, and the views across the Gippsland plains are spectacular. Enjoy the reward for your efforts. We have a couple of ride distance for returning back to our accommodation, but leave that decision for how you feel after reaching the summit.

This evening, we’ll enjoy another lovely dinner at our 4-star accommodation.
