Passo dello Stelvio
We will leave the shores of Como this morning and make our way into the Italian Alps to start our ride up the famous Passo dello Stelvio starting in Bormio. You will have seen and heard about this mountain pass through its popularity with cyclists, bikers and motoring enthusiasts.
Stelvio is 21.5km long to the top of the pass, which at 2,757m, is the highest paved road in the Eastern Alps with fabulous views across to Switzerland.
The original road was built in 1820-25 by the Austrian Empire to connect the former Austrian province of Lombardia with the rest of Austria. After riding the Stelvio and enjoying spectacular scenery at the summit, we will return to Bormio to celebrate our experience of this extraordinary ride.
Our longer ride gives you the opportunity to follow a course set by a recent stage of the Giro Italia, passing briefly into Switzerland before climbing to the summit Stelvio.
Our next three nights are spent in Bormio, close to the Swiss border, in a charming family-run hotel near the town centre. Due to its thermal baths, Bormio has been a popular town since the time when the Roman aristocracy travelled to Bormio in order to enjoy warm baths in the mountainous scenery.
Bormio is centred around the medieval town, but for cyclists, it is a popular destination being close to the famous climb of Stelvio, Gavia and the mighty Mortirolo.
Tonight, you are free to explore Bormio and have dinner in the village.
