After bike fittings and a tour briefing, we roll out for our first ride, a gentle loop through the surrounding countryside. Tasmania Cycling Tour, Ride to Derby via Jacob’s Ladder

Leaving Launceston behind, we head into Tasmania’s north east, where the landscape begins to open and the roads grow quieter with every kilometre. Today’s ride builds gradually through farmland and forest before reaching one of Tasmania’s most iconic climbs.

Midway through the day, we take on Jacob’s Ladder, a remarkable series of tight switchbacks climbing the Ben Lomond plateau. Originally constructed in the early 1900s to access the highlands, it’s now a bucket-list ascent, known for its dramatic geometry and sweeping views across the valley below. It’s a challenging but rewarding moment, and a true highlight of the week.

From the highlands, we descend and continue towards Derby, where the character shifts once again. Arriving into this small but globally recognised cycling town, you’ll feel the energy immediately. Tasmania’s wild interior feels both remote and deeply connected to its cycling culture, setting the tone for the days ahead.

This morning we step off the bike and into Freycinet National Park. A short walk brings us to the Wineglass Bay lookout, where sweeping views open over one of Australia’s most iconic beaches. Standing here, you gain a deeper perspective of Tasmania’s natural beauty, vast, quiet, and remarkably unspoiled.

From here, we continue south towards Hobart, following the coastline with time to stop for a relaxed lunch along the way. The journey offers more of Tasmania’s changing landscapes before arriving into its vibrant capital.

We roll out from the city and begin the ascent, gradually leaving the waterfront behind as the road winds upwards through changing landscapes. The climb builds at a consistent gradient, allowing you to find your rhythm as each turn reveals wider views across Hobart, the Derwent River, and the coastline beyond.

Reaching the summit is a special moment. From here, the scale and wildness of Tasmania come into full view, a fitting culmination of the journey you’ve experienced throughout the week.

After taking it all in, we enjoy a long, flowing descent back towards Hobart. At the base of the mountain, we stop at Cascade Brewery, an Australian icon and the country’s oldest operating brewery, to celebrate the achievement with a well-earned local beer.
