Portugal Cycling Tour, Douro & Serra da Estrela

March 3, 2027 to March 11, 2027

Portugal is one of those cycling destinations that surprises almost everyone who rides here.

The roads are quieter than many of Europe’s better-known cycling regions, the food is exceptional and the riding ranges from vineyard-lined valleys to some of the best mountain roads on the Iberian Peninsula.

Our Portugal Cycling Tour combines two regions that we believe showcase the country at its very best. In the Douro Valley you’ll ride through rolling vineyard landscapes above the river, passing traditional villages and family-owned wineries that have shaped the region for centuries. Later in the tour, the riding shifts dramatically as we head into Serra da Estrela, Portugal’s highest mountain range and home to some of the country’s most rewarding climbs.

This is a tour designed for cyclists who enjoy great riding, great company and the confidence that comes from travelling with an experienced support team. We take care of the logistics, accommodation, luggage transfers and ride support, allowing you to focus on the roads ahead and enjoy everything Portugal has to offer both on and off the bike.

Portugal Cycling Tour Overview

Portugal has become one of our favourite places to ride in Europe.

While France, Italy and Spain are often the first destinations cyclists think of, Portugal offers something refreshingly different. The roads are quieter, the pace feels more relaxed and every day seems to deliver a new riding experience. It’s a country that rewards cyclists who enjoy exploring beyond the traditional cycling hotspots.

Many of our guests first travel with us on events such as our Tour de France Cycling Tours, where the excitement comes from following the world’s biggest bike race. Portugal offers a different kind of cycling experience. Here, the focus is on the ride itself, quiet roads, authentic regional culture and landscapes that seem purpose-built for riding a bike.

The tour begins in the Douro Valley, one of the most distinctive cycling regions we’ve ridden anywhere in Europe. The roads twist through terraced vineyards above the Douro River, linking small villages, local cafés and viewpoints that make you want to stop and take it all in. The riding is never dull. Climbs are rewarded with expansive valley views, while descents lead you towards riverside towns and some of Portugal’s best food and wine.

As we move towards Serra da Estrela, the character of the tour changes completely. The vineyard roads give way to Portugal’s highest mountain range, where longer climbs, cooler air and wide-open landscapes create some of the most memorable riding of the week. These are the roads many guests talk about long after they return home, not because they’re the hardest, but because they combine challenge, scenery and a real sense of achievement.

What makes this tour special isn’t just the riding. It’s sitting down after a big day on the bike with fellow cyclists, enjoying regional food and local wines, sharing stories from the day’s ride and looking forward to tomorrow’s route. It’s the small villages, friendly locals and the feeling that you’ve discovered a side of Portugal many visitors never see.

Throughout the tour, the Bikestyle Tours team takes care of the details. From route planning and luggage transfers to support vehicles and local knowledge, we’re there to ensure guests can simply enjoy the riding and make the most of every day.

For cyclists looking for a premium Portugal Cycling Tour that combines rewarding riding, authentic culture and full support from experienced tour operators, this is a tour that consistently exceeds expectations.

Why We Love Riding in Portugal

Portugal is one of those places that continually exceeds expectations.

What we love most is the variety. One day you’re riding through the vineyard-covered hills of the Douro Valley, climbing quiet roads above the river and stopping in small villages that feel untouched by mass tourism. A few days later you’re tackling the long mountain roads of Serra da Estrela, where every climb is rewarded with sweeping views and some of the best descents in the country.

The riding itself is fantastic, but it’s everything around the bike that makes Portugal special. Long lunches, welcoming locals, excellent coffee stops and dinners shared over regional food and wine all become part of the experience. It’s a destination where the pace feels relaxed, yet every day on the bike delivers something memorable.

Many of our guests first travel with us on our Giro d’Italia Cycling Tours or Vuelta a España Cycling Tours, where the excitement comes from being immersed in the atmosphere of professional racing. Portugal offers something completely different. Here, the focus is on quiet roads, authentic regional culture and the simple enjoyment of riding through landscapes that feel largely undiscovered by international cycling tourism.

Perhaps what we appreciate most is that Portugal still feels authentic. The roads are quiet, the cycling is rewarding and you rarely feel like you’re following the well-worn path of mainstream cycling tourism. For cyclists looking for great riding, genuine local culture and the confidence of travelling with an experienced support team, Portugal has become one of our favourite places to ride in Europe.
