Growing up in Melbourne, Gilbert discovered the French newspaper clippings of his father’s cycling exploits. A passion began.

Gilbert started racing BMX and track before taking more seriously to the road bike after completing his university studies in 2003. Pursuing a dream for racing in Europe for a team in his family’s region of Auvergne. His team included now, multiple Tour de France riders sucha s Florian Vachon and one of France’s most exciting riders – Julian Alaphilippe.
